What is it?
Trapping and snaring is the practice of building a mechanical device that captures or kills an animal on its own, without a person present at the moment of the catch. The simplest form, a snare, is a loop of wire or cordage set across a game trail so that an animal's own forward movement pulls the loop tight around its neck or body. Deadfalls and body-grip traps add a triggered mechanism β a suspended weight or a spring-loaded jaw β that delivers a fast kill instead of just holding the animal.
What is it good for?
Trapping converts time into food instead of converting effort into food. A snare set correctly keeps "hunting" around the clock β including while you sleep, forage, or do other camp work β which makes it one of the best calorie-return-on-effort methods for obtaining small-game protein. A line of snares checked twice a day will consistently outperform hours of active still-hunting for the same energy expenditure, because the traps do the waiting for you.
Legality and ethics β read this before anything else. Trapping and snaring are heavily regulated, and in many jurisdictions unlicensed snaring is outright illegal, even on land you own, because of animal-welfare and non-target-species concerns (pets, protected species, raptors). This article documents how the mechanism works as general survival and bushcraft knowledge β it is not an endorsement to set traps without checking local law first. Treat unlicensed trapping as something reserved for a genuine survival emergency, and default to licensed, regulated trapping or hunting wherever that's an option.
The physics behind it
A snare is a one-way energy trap: the simplest ground-set version stores no energy of its own, instead redirecting the animal's own kinetic energy into tightening a slip loop that a one-directional lock (a slip knot or a wire snare lock) won't loosen again. Spring-pole and deadfall versions add stored potential energy β a bent sapling under tension, or a weight held up against gravity β released by a trigger needing only a small disturbing force to fire. That trigger is the key engineering problem in every version: it must hold under the stored load yet release at animal-scale force, a classic mechanical advantage / metastable equilibrium problem β a peg balanced just past its tipping point, or a notch cut so shallow that a slight pull walks it free.
History
Snaring predates agriculture and is documented across nearly every hunter-gatherer culture, using sinew, plant-fiber cordage, or hide thongs before wire existed. The spring-pole (bent-sapling) snare and the figure-four deadfall trigger appear independently across Native American, European, and Asian trapping traditions, because the same mechanical principle β stored tension released by a light trigger β solves the same problem everywhere. Steel snare wire and the commercial body-grip trap (patented in the 1950s) are 20th-century refinements for faster, more humane kills, and modern wildlife-management agencies have since layered size, placement, and check-interval regulations on top of the old craft.
Simple version
A ground snare: a loop of wire or cordage, roughly fist-sized for the target species, hung across a game trail at the animal's head height and anchored to a fixed point (a stake, root, or heavy branch). The animal pushes through, the loop tightens around its neck, and a simple locking mechanism (a wire twist-lock, or an overhand slip knot in cordage) prevents it from loosening again. This version has no kill mechanism β it holds the animal in place until the trapper returns, so check intervals matter both for yield and for animal welfare.
Advanced version
A spring-pole snare adds a bent sapling or bowed branch under tension, connected via a trigger (a notched toggle or a "figure-four" style catch) to the snare loop. When the loop is disturbed, the trigger releases and the sapling springs upright, snapping the animal off the ground β a faster, more humane kill that also lifts the catch out of reach of ground scavengers. A simple deadfall (a flat rock or heavy log propped on a baited figure-four trigger) works on the same stored-energy principle but crushes rather than snares, and suits animals that won't reliably walk a defined trail.

Industrial version
Modern regulated trapping uses body-grip (conibear-style) traps β a spring-loaded rectangular frame that closes on the animal with a calibrated, tested kill force, sized to the target species to meet humane-trap certification standards (such as national and international best-management-practice trap testing programs). These are manufactured to consistent tolerances, sold through licensed retailers, and deployed under regulations governing species, season, trap size, set location (e.g. water-set only, to avoid catching pets), and mandatory check intervals. Wildlife agencies also run large-scale, humane live-capture trapping (box traps, net traps) for population monitoring, relocation, and disease surveillance β the same trigger-and-container logic as a deadfall, scaled up for a live, unharmed release.
Building your own
- Scout first. Find a well-used game trail β a narrow path through vegetation with visible tracks, droppings, or worn ground β rather than guessing at a location.
- Size the loop to the species, roughly the diameter of the target animal's head/neck; too large and it slips over the body without catching, too small and the animal avoids it.
- Set loop height at the animal's head height as it travels the trail, centered in a natural pinch point (between two obstructions) so the animal is funneled through the loop rather than around it.
- Anchor solidly β a fixed stake, root, or (for the spring-pole version) the bent sapling itself. A loose anchor lets the animal drag the whole snare away.
- Set the trigger so it releases with minimal disturbance β test it by hand before relying on it, adjusting the notch or toggle until it fires reliably but not accidentally from wind or debris.
- Minimize scent and disturbance where practical β avoid heavy foot traffic near the set.
- Check often, both for yield and for humane reasons β a live-holding ground snare should be checked at least twice a day.
Common mistakes
- Setting on a faint or old trail instead of a clearly active one β check for fresh sign first.
- Loop sized wrong for the target species β too big lets the animal walk through untouched, too small deters it entirely.
- Anchor too weak, letting the animal escape with the snare attached (a welfare problem as well as a lost catch).
- Trigger set too stiff (never fires) or too sensitive (fires on wind or falling debris, wasting the set).
- Ignoring local law β many regions restrict or ban snaring, require tags/licenses, or mandate check intervals; skipping this check first is both a legal and an ethical failure.
- Setting where non-target animals (pets, protected species) are likely to pass.
- Failing to check traps often enough, causing unnecessary suffering or losing the catch to scavengers.
How to measure
- Trail activity: count fresh tracks/droppings per visit β sign refreshed within 24 hours marks a good candidate; a stale trail does not.
- Set success rate: track catches per trap-night across a line of traps; a well-placed line should produce results within a few days, and persistent zeros mean the placement or sizing is wrong.
- Trigger reliability: share of sets sprung by the target species versus sprung empty (false triggers) or not sprung at all β use this to tune notch depth and loop diameter.
- Time-to-catch: hours between setting and catching, as a rough yield-per-effort figure against active hunting for the same time investment.
